As the cases of Covid-19 decrease in the spring of 2021, Ruby Bridges Elementary School, among the rest of 9,000 bay area public schools, is taking their first step on returning to normalcy. Starting March 15th, students have given the option to choose either learning on campus partially or remain remote learning. Upon one year anniversary of the pandemic, two students reflect on their feelings towards distance learning as well as the reopening of the campus. Their parents, who have been homeschooling their children for almost a year now, have something to say about their unique experiences.

Mathea is learning on Zoom in the afternoon. “She is easily distracted by everything around her, which makes the learning experience so much less rewarding. I really want her to fully return in-person learning”, Mathea’s mother, who does not want to appear in the photo, complains in Cantonese. She also finds it difficult to help her daughter with reading since she doesn’t speak English.
